Shiatsu/Japanese facial massage
Practised by Su-man Hsu, BA,BSS
Japanese Facial Massage is a traditional Japanese Art, similar to tea ceremony or
calligraphy, and has a long history with countless additions and refinements by
masters. Great effort has gone into perfecting this ancient therapy which is why it
is the most refined and effective facial-therapy system in existence.
This unique form of skin care has its roots in traditional eastern values where
beauty is considered the overall reflection of an optimal balance between physical,
psychological and spiritual health. Typical western massage, though relaxing, is a
two-stage facial massage that normally consists of cleansing and moisturising.
Japanese Facial Massage incorporates three stages: cleansing, moisturising and
energising. By applying specific finger pressure techniques this massage not only
improves facial skin but also relaxes facial muscles and stimulates the flow of
energy through the face. Toxins are removed and the end result will be a beautiful
healthy appearance. Sessions normally last between one hour and seventy five minutes
and are administered in a comfortable and relaxing environment. Only natural and
organic products are applied to the skin.
Shiatsu, which literally means "finger pressure", like
acupuncture and herbal medicine, is a natural healing therapy that has been used for thousands of
years to maintain health and longevity. Originally an integral part of Chinese Medicine, it has
developed in Japan over the last century as an official manual therapy. Shiatsu treatment is
holistic, with the practitioner working on the whole body rather than focusing on the area where
the symptoms are most obvious. When applied on a regular basis, Shiatsu can help relieve stress
and tension, calm the nervous system, stabilize emotional and psychological conditions, improve
digestion, ease sports injuries, relieve backache, improve posture, sleeping, and breathing and
enhance vitality and general health.
Each session lasts between thirty minutes and one hour. The first session may be
slightly longer since your practitioner will take a detailed case history to develop a complete
picture of your health according to the principles of oriental medicine. Please bring or wear
loose, warm, comfortable clothing, preferably cotton, e.g. sweatshirt, tracksuit trousers and
cotton socks. Do not eat heavily in the two hours prior to treatment. Do not drink alcohol
before or after treatment. After treatment drink plenty of water to smooth the flow of changes
through the system.
Pilates
Pilates is a unique form of exercise based on the original repertoire of Joseph
Pilates. This refreshing and energizing workout aims to improve the body's structure through
gentle but focused exercise, rewarding you with a leaner body, more poise, and greater
confidence. It improves posture and increases flexibility by strengthening your core weaker
muscles and stretching out the overused ones thereby balancing and realigning the body.
Regardless of your current level of fitness - from sedentary office worker to fitness
enthusiast, Pilates is a safe effective exercise for everyone, even children. It is beneficial
for those with general back and shoulder pain and can be used by pregnant women as a great way
to stay in shape before and after pregnancy due to its emphasis on core - stability and
controlled breathing.

Alexander Technique
Practised by Yoshi Inada
The Technique is a means to end habits that we don't want and acquire others that we do. It is a
process of pyscho-physical re-education that explores how thinking in action determines how we
use our bodies, whether in dance, theatre, music, riding and athletics or simply in everyday
life - how we walk, drive, ride a bicycle, sit at a table, and use a keyboard or a pen or a
mobile phone. While it is most definitely not a therapy or treatment, the work can be very
useful for people suffering from stress, back problems or trauma.
The Alexander Technique teaches you how to carry out your everyday activities with
far less stress and strain, and facilitates the development of a new way of using
your body and mind as a whole. The technique gives you the opportunity to expand
your awareness of tension and the concept of movement. You will also learn how to
prevent habitual tension which often creates various symptoms such as headaches,
backaches, and a general feeling of tension and stress.
Alexander Technique goes beyond superficial posture and style to deeper issues of use and habit
- addressing not just the body, but the whole self.
Clinical Hypnotherapy
Practised by Patricia Trohear
Clinical hypnotherapy refers to the use of hypnosis in the treatment of a range of
disorders which are often stress related. It works on the mind/body connection and is gentle and
non-invasive, thus allowing the client to unlock his/her huge resources for change and self-healing.
It may be helpful for the following:
- Pain relief - in arthritis, rheumatism, post-operatively, lower back pain and migraine.
- To boost the immune system.
- Stress related and psychological problems - addictions, obesity, bed wetting, eating disorders, phobias, panic attacks, mild depression and insomnia.
A number of one hour sessions will normally be required for the above. Smoking cessation,
however, requires one two-hour slot.
Life Coaching
Practised by Lynn G. Blades
What Is Life Coaching?
Life coaching is motivational, inspiring, positive, exciting and action driven. A coach will help you look at where
you are now and where you'd like to be, and help you bridge the gap. By raising awareness and encouraging you to take
responsibility for you life, a Coach can help you rise to your own particular challenge and go further than you ever
thought possible.
It has to be said that Coaching involves a lot of hard work and commitment. However, if you are ready for change, the
benefits can be enormous.
Are you right for Coaching?
The only way to be sure is to have an informal talk with a coach. However, the following statements are typical Coaching
scenarios.
- I have pressing issues to resolve but don't know where to start.
- I seem to spend all my time trying to catch up.
- My life is so stressed out; all work and no play.
- I've had a problem or challenge that's been around for a long time, but I've never managed to sort it out.
- I would just like to run my ideas past someone who is actually receptive to them.
- I feel isolated in my job but find it difficult to talk to colleagues in case they take it as a sign that I've failed.
- I'm hiding relationship problems because I can't share them with anyone that would be disloyal.
- I'm in a rut and I'm too drained to get out of it.
- I've lost my direction.
- I'm repeating the same old patterns in my life.
- I've have a problem/challenge that I've never been able to conquer. Now it's affecting my whole life.
If someone can identify with one or more of those scenarios then Life Coaching is a viable option.
What does a Life Coach actually do? Here are just a few things a Coach can do for you.
- A Life Coach will listen to you without making any judgements
- A Life Coach will never criticise what you're saying.
- A Life Coach keeps everything you say in complete confidence.
- A Life Coach will help you realise what really matters to you.
- A Life Coach will keep you motivated and support you through periods of challenge and change.
- A Life Coach will really listen to you.
- A Life Coach will help you understand why you make the choices you do.
- A Life Coach will help you develop the tools you need to shape your ideal life.
- A Life Coach will help you to turn your dreams into concrete, written goals which you can then turn into reality.
- A Life Coach will help you to define where you are now and where you want to be.
- A Life Coach truly believes that you can succeed in whatever you most desire.
- A Life Coach will not impose solutions or give unsolicited advice.
- A Life Coach will act as your own personal sounding board.
- A Life Coach will help you work out a realistic action plan to help you reach your personal goals.
- A Life Coach will help you achieve a balanced, satisfying and happy life.
What is the difference between Life Coaching and Counselling?
- Coaching is not a therapy like counselling which tends to deal with past issues such as deep seated emotional problems.
- Coaching is about looking at where you are now and taking you forward.
- Coaching can help you deal with a multitude of issues including stress, diet, equilibrium, clearing clutter, assertiveness, relationship issues, finances, social life, time management, career issues, and much more.
- A Coach will help you to identify and set your goals and encourage you to go for what you really want in your life.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that Coaching is a quick fix. It's not. Coaching is about permanent improvement. It's
about examining your values and beliefs, how positive you are about yourself, whether you are holding yourself back, or
feel you are one of life's victims. It's about change, leaving your comfort zone and feeling the power of taking
responsibility for your own life. It's about achievement.

Acupuncture
Practised by Natasha Barnes
Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other
eastern countries for thousands of years. Treatment focuses on improving the overall
physical and emotional well being of the patient and in doing do can relieve many
specific symptoms that may exist.
Chinese medicine works on the body's health by affecting energy; called Qi that
runs though the energy channels of the body. The Qi rises to the surface of the
skin, where it can be stimulated by using acupuncture points. Insertion of fine
needles into the appropriate acupuncture point can stimulate the body's own healing
response and help restore its natural balance. There are around 500 recognised
acupuncture points on the body of which 100 are commonly used. The points used
during a treatment are not necessarily close to the part of the body where the
symptoms are experienced. For example, a needle may be inserted into the foot or
hand for a headache.
An acupuncture appointment lasts for 60 minutes, although the first consultation
will be longer to include a thorough diagnostic interview. The first session allows
the acupuncturist to assess the general state of health in order to identify the
underlying pattern of disharmony and decide upon the most effective treatment. You
will be asked about your current symptoms and medical history, your diet, digestive
system, sleep patterns and emotional state. The diagnosis also includes feeling the
pulse on both wrists as they reflect underlying imbalances and observing the
tongue's structure, colour and coating to indicate the body's health.
In traditional acupuncture, everyone is considered as an individual so treatment and
the number of appointments needed varies from person to person. Certain conditions
may require more sessions and this is usually discussed in the first session.
Normally, treatments are recommended on a weekly basis until the symptoms improve
and then less frequently to maintain health.
The British Acupuncture Council is the professional body for Acupuncturists in the
UK. All members have qualified from recognised institutions and under taken a full
training of 4 years. Members are bound by strict Codes of Ethics and Safe Practice
which detail stringent standards of hygiene and the use of sterilised needles.
Osteopathy and Naturopathy
Practised by Claudia Nella
Osteopaths recognise that much of the pain and disability that we suffer from are
often a consequence of abnormalities in the body's structure. The body learns to
compensate for these abnormalities, and over time these compensations have an
adverse effect on other parts of the body leading to further pain and/or impaired
function.
Each patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural perspective and
appropriate methods of treatment are chosen according to the individual's needs.
This gentle manipulation of the musculoskeletal system is highly effective in the
treatment of:
- Back, neck and joint pain,
- Headaches
- Sports or dance injuries,
- General aches and pains (from a weak knee to a bloated stomach)
- Repetitive strain injury and work related problems
- Stress
- Discomfort during pregnancy
- Childhood headaches, back pain, colic and growing pains
What to expect:
On your first visit a detailed case history will be taken which will not only
include questions about the problem that has brought you but also details of your
past medical history, your general health and any medication that you may be taking.
This helps create a holistic picture that not only looks at the symptoms but also
lifestyle to help understand why the problem has arisen. After the case history has
been taken an evaluation of your physical condition will be made. This involves
postural assessment and observation of how the spine and other joints move. Any
appropriate tests will also be performed. Muscle tone and strength may be assessed
and joints examined in order to make a holistic diagnosis. I will then discuss my
findings with you. If appropriate osteopathic treatment will be given on the first
visit. My treatment is very gentle and uses a wide range of techniques to suit the
individual's needs. These include deep tissue massage techniques, mobilisation, and
gentle manipulation. I also favour the use of cranial osteopathy, a more subtle but
very effective technique, which is especially beneficial to children and babies.
Naturopathy
Naturopathy works on the principle that the body can heal itself given the right
conditions. In a holistic approach to health, naturopaths give advice on diet,
nutrition, hydrotherapy, and lifestyle.
