How can I join the Practice?
We are still taking on new patients. Telephone to book an appointment telling the secretary that you are a new patient.
A half hour appointment will be made in order to deal with any acute problem and also to go through our patient
registration process. You will be asked to provide a sample of urine when you come and we will also take your blood
pressure and measure your height and weight. The fee for this initial consultation is £100.00.
What hours are you available?
The office is open between 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Friday and consultations are booked at half hourly intervals
from 9 a.m. through to 4.30 p.m. with a short break for lunch. Routine surgeries are not held on a weekend.
What are the provisions for home visiting and out of hours service?
Outside regular office hours, the 24 hour telephone line will get through to an answer phone which will give
instructions regarding contacting either Dr Sawyer or Dr Khalique according to whoever is on call. We will always be
available to take a call and in rare circumstances may personally make a home visit or arrange to see people in our
office as an emergency. More often however we will offer telephone advice and where appropriate may be able to telephone
prescriptions through to pharmacies. Under certain circumstances it may be appropriate to arrange admission to hospital
directly and it is not a prerequisite that the individual be seen prior to this taking place. Our usual policy is to
arrange for an alternative doctor to make a home visit should one be required and they can then discuss the case with us
if they believe hospitalisation is necessary. Please note that the above services are only available to patients who are
already registered with the Practice and there is a charge for out of hours advice and services.
Can you reclaim our fees from Private Health Insurance Companies?
The general answer to this is "No". UK based Private Health Insurance companies will usually only recognise for the
purposes of reimbursement, the services of individuals whom they define as specialist. They have their own special rules
for making this decision and we do not fulfil their criteria. BUPA International however will usually reimburse fees for
any doctor who has seen a patient and a number of American Life Insurance companies will also make such reimbursement.
We do not deal directly with insurance companies and work on the basis of individuals settling their own bills.
What do I do if I am not happy?
We have a formal complaints procedure and this is listed in our Practice Policies. Fundamentally, the complaint should
initially be addressed to the Practice Manager who will try to answer it. If necessary this answer will be supported by
information provided by the doctors with an offer of the possibility of discussing the issues face to face with or
without an arbitrator before finally moving into a formal policy utilising the complaints procedure set up by the
Independent Doctors Forum and also available on their website independentdoctorsforum.net.
